Observations

The pinelands is a habitat that is dominated by slash pine (Pinus elliottii) and low shrubs.Ê They are highly resistant to fire, and are actually maintained by fire.Ê The regular burning of this habitat is necessary to prevent succession from turning the habitat into a hardwood hammock.Ê There was evidence of burning on the trees.

Some of the creatures commonly found in this habitat are tree snails, stick bugs, and tree frogs

In a sinkhole, about 2.5 Ð 3 feet, we found an orb spider web that spanned quite a bit of surface area, attached to some grass on one side and the end of a fern frond on the other.Ê This web seemed to be about 2 feet wide and had different levels.Ê Since we had just experienced a recent rainstorm, we observed the spider was repairing its web.Ê The mechanistic back and forth motion, combined with and increasingly smaller circumference made for a pleasurable observation.
