Descriptive Information

We observed sponges that had been washed up on shore.Ê We found four major varieties, though none of them have been officially identified.Ê All of them were smooth, gelatinous, and flexible.

  • Sponge 1 -- purple with little yellow spots. This sponge had folded layers on top and underneath.Ê It was about 1 1/2 to 3 inches thick.Ê There was no evidence for a base attachment location.
  • Sponge 2 -- yellow with small, black dots in its clear structure.Ê It had a hard, circular structure on the bottom where it would attach to the base.
  • Sponge 3 -- red.Ê It was thick, small, and had a hint of brown.
  • Sponge 4 -- gray with many folds and lobes.Ê It had tiny black and gray spots all over it.
  • Sponge 5 -- gray with small circles all over it.Ê Each circle had a few black spots inside.
